10 lesões mais frequentes na corrida

10 most common running injuries

Despite its many benefits, running is a sport that, like other sports, can also cause certain injuries. These can occur due to the use of inappropriate shoes, lack of stretching, poor posture, lack of rest and even overtraining.

These are the 10 most common injuries that runners face, check them out below:

1. Plantar fasciitis

It is the inflammation of the tissue that extends across the entire sole of the foot, from the heel to the toes. It can cause pain and difficulty walking. Treatment is usually based on medication and physiotherapy.

2. Calcaneal tendonitis (Achilles tendonitis)

Inflammation of the tendon, which connects the heel bone to the calf muscle. The main symptoms are pain and sensitivity in the heel. This type of tendonitis can be treated with physical therapy and medication.

3. Shin Splints (Shin Splints)

It is caused by wear and tear of the tibia, the front bone in the upper leg. There are two types of shin splints: posterior and inferior. In both cases, the main symptom is severe pain in the leg. Treatment includes rest, ice, and painkillers.

4. Sprained ankle

This is a total or partial rupture of the ligaments, usually occurring when a person is careless and twists their foot. The sprain can cause pain and swelling. In the simplest cases, it is treated with rest and ice and hot water compresses, while in more severe cases, physiotherapy is necessary.

5. Chondromalacia Patella (Runner's Knee)

Caused by poor posture or muscular imbalance. It can cause discomfort and pain that appears to be in the cartilage, but actually comes from the tissues of the patella. Treatment is usually done through physiotherapy and retraining of knee movements for running.

6. Acute low back pain (back pain)

It is also caused by poor posture while running. Severe pain can be treated with painkillers and, in simple cases, tends to go away with rest.

7. Muscle strain in the posterior region of the thigh

It occurs when the muscle fibers are stretched beyond their limit or when the range of motion during running is shorter than necessary. The pain from the strain is immediate. The most commonly used treatment is physiotherapy.

8. Stress fractures

These are microfractures in the lower extremities of the fibula and tibia — bones of the leg — metatarsals and femur. In most cases, they occur due to overtraining, so they tend to improve with the reduction or even interruption of physical activities and a progressive readaptation of training.

9. Pulbalgia

Inflammation in the pubic region caused by incorrect hip movement. This injury causes sharp pain and requires rest and physiotherapy to treat it.

10. Meniscus injury

Caused by cartilage fatigue, it is usually felt as pain on the sides of the knees. Treatment is also done with physiotherapy and in more severe cases surgery may be necessary.

If left untreated, most injuries can develop into a more serious condition or even become chronic, so it is always important to seek guidance from experts and adapt your running style to your physical fitness.
