Earthquake: Learn How to Act and What You Should Have in Your Emergency Kit

Earthquakes are unpredictable and potentially devastating natural phenomena. While we can’t predict when an earthquake will strike, we can prepare ourselves to minimize the risks and protect our families. In this article, we’ll cover what to do during an earthquake and what to include in your emergency kit.

How to Act During an Earthquake

  1. Keep Calm:

    • In the event of an earthquake, the first rule is to remain calm. Panic can lead to poor decisions and put your safety at risk.
  2. Protect yourself:

    • If you are indoors, move to a safe place, such as under a sturdy table or against an interior wall, away from windows and objects that could fall. Use your arms to protect your head and neck.
    • If you are outdoors, move away from buildings, power lines, trees, and any other structures that could collapse. Move to an open area and crouch down until the shaking stops.
  3. Avoid Elevators:

    • Never use elevators during an earthquake. Stairs are a safer option if you need to evacuate the building after the tremor.
  4. After the Quake:

    • When the shaking stops, check for injuries and help if possible. Be alert for aftershocks and only leave the building if it is safe to do so.

What to Include in Your Emergency Kit

Having an emergency kit ready can be vital to your survival and comfort in the hours following an earthquake. Here’s what it should include:

  1. Water and Food:

    • Have at least three liters of water per person, enough for three days.
    • Include non-perishable, easy-to-prepare foods, such as canned goods, energy bars, and nuts.
  2. Medication and First Aid:

    • Keep a well-stocked first aid kit, including painkillers, bandages, disinfectant and any essential medications you may need.
  3. Flashlight and Batteries:

    • During an earthquake, power outages are likely. Have a flashlight with extra batteries ready to use.
  4. Important Documents:

    • Store copies of important documents such as ID cards, passports, insurance policies, and medical information in a waterproof bag.
  5. Battery Operated Radio:

    • A portable radio is essential for receiving information and instructions from authorities during and after an earthquake.
  6. Clothes and Blankets:

    • Include warm clothing, blankets or sleeping bags, especially if you live in a cold area.
  7. Personal Hygiene Items:

    • Wipes, toilet paper, toothbrush, toothpaste, and hand sanitizer are basic items that should be in your kit.
  8. Cash:

    • Have some cash on hand, as electronic services may not work after an earthquake.

Preparation is Key

Preparing for an earthquake is everyone’s responsibility. Knowing what to do during an earthquake and having an emergency kit ready can make a significant difference in your safety and the safety of your family. Review your emergency kit regularly and update it as needed. Remember, being prepared can save lives.
